SANDSCAPE (C 2007): Mixed Media Installation at Interaccess Gallery, OCAD and Ryerson University (Toronto)

SANDSCAPE was designed and executed in collaboration with Emily Lam, Chris Postill, Brandon Marsh, Jordy Lucier and Edward Keeble as a two site installation at Interacess Gallery and Ryerson University in cooparation with OCAD in Toronto, Canada.

The SANDSCAPE project consisted of teleconnected installations on opposite sides of the city of Toronto. In engaging with the piece, participants communicated by sand across a network, causing subtle environmental changes in the other location. At the Ryerson Image Arts exhibition, a series of sand ‘pods’ (mini sandboxes) were presented to users as a tactile interface to play with. At the Interaccess Gallery, a manufactured beach encouraged users to sit, enjoy and reflect on their experience within distilled, sterile beach environment. The communication between these pieces occured through both tactile and auditory vibration. When a user in the manufactured beach moved around the environment, vibrations were sent from their movement, over a network, and reproduced through vibrating speakers in the sand pods at Ryerson. Likewise, when users moved the sand in the pods, these vibrations would be sent via the network to the manufactured beach and were experienced as sound vibrations there. In this way, users at two separate sites could communicate through vibration via their movements (whether of their bodies or their hands).
